Embudu Village

A 47-year-old German woman on holiday at Embudu Village died this morning following a diving excursion.

Speaking to Minivan News today, Mohamed Faheem, assistant manager at the resort, said the woman had been diving at the victory spot near the airport along with 12 other people.

“She went down together with her husband,” he said. “It’s estimated that they went about 20 metres deep and she started having difficulty breathing because of the strong currents. Both of them came up together.”

He added that the crew informed him that her regulator was loose when she surfaced and she started foaming at the mouth when they took her onboard.

“Since they were very close to Male’, they took her to IGMH [Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital],” he said. “She was dead on arrival there.”

Police Sergeant Ahmed Shiyam said the incident was currently under investigation.

Faheem said police have taken statements from the crew and the dive instructors.

He added the cause of death was unknown at this point, but the couple were experienced divers.

“He has been on about 200 dives,” he said. “She’s been diving a lot as well.”
